What Is Pavers & Walkways?

We handle the demolition and preparation side of paver and walkway projects: removing old interlock, asphalt, or hard-surface slabs; excavating to the correct base depth; grading for drainage; and installing the granular base and edge restraints. Your paver installer arrives to a site that's done right.

Our crews work across Toronto and all 30 GTA municipalities — we know the local permit offices, soil conditions, and site constraints that affect your project.

Our Process

01

Assessment & Layout

We assess the existing surface condition, confirm grades and drainage directions, and mark the work zone before demo begins.

02

Existing Surface Removal

Old interlock pavers, asphalt, or hard-surface slabs are broken up, loaded, and hauled. We sort materials for recycling where possible.

03

Sub-grade Excavation

The sub-grade is excavated to the required depth — typically 10–14 inches for driveways, 8–10 inches for walkways — for proper granular base depth.

04

Base Compaction

Granular A (compacted road base) is placed in compacted lifts to the specified depth. Each lift is compacted with a plate compactor and checked for grade.

05

Edge Restraint Installation

Plastic or aluminum edge restraints are spiked into the base along the perimeter, providing lateral support for the interlock once laid.

06

Final Grade Check

We verify the finished base grade drains away from structures at the required slope (minimum 2%) before turning the site over to the paver installer.

Permits & City Requirements

Paver and walkway work generally does not require a permit unless it involves a driveway wider than the existing driveway apron, changes to storm drainage, or work within a road allowance. Front yard driveway alterations may require a Driveway Entrance Permit from the municipality. We'll advise based on your scope.

Permit requirements vary by municipality and scope. We'll identify what's required during the site visit and advise on expected timelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you install the pavers? +
We specialize in the demolition and preparation scope. We work alongside your paver installer — or can recommend qualified interlock installers in the GTA.
How deep should the base be? +
For pedestrian walkways: 8–10 inches of compacted granular base. For vehicle driveways: 10–14 inches. We follow ICPI (Interlocking Paved Surface Institute) base guidelines.
Can you reuse the old pavers? +
If the existing interlock pavers are in good condition, they can be cleaned and set aside for reuse. Let us know during quoting — it changes the removal scope slightly.
How long does base prep take? +
An average Toronto front driveway and walkway (600–900 sq ft) takes 2–3 days for demo and base prep.
What's the slope requirement for drainage? +
A minimum 2% slope (1/4 inch per foot) away from the house is required. We check all grades against a laser level before turning over the base.
Do you handle gravel driveway prep? +
Yes — we can excavate and grade for gravel driveways as well, including geotextile installation to prevent migration.
